THE BATTLE OF LAURIA OF 1806

Localization

The historical centre of Lauria preserves the places and the spaces of the battle and in this context the tangible and distinctive elements are : the remains of the ancient medieval wall; The gates of the ancient city (for example the S. Antuonio gate in the Castle); The monastery of S. Bernardino, located at the entrance of the hamlet , and at that time was the place of resistance of the monks; Palazzo Masella, in the hamlet district (lower); The convent of S. Antonio, also a place of battle, located at a further point of access to the Castle district; The ancient Parrazzini Palace, where the French troops set up;the Municipal Villa, at that time used as a common pit for the fallen of both armies, and therefore named "the Wave of the Dead" (where there is a "commemorative grave"); And, last but not least, the ancient house (now restored)of Domenico Lentini, a young priest of the diocese led by Monsignor Lodovici. Several houses and residences, in addition to via Carlo Alberto and Via Cairoli, still have signs of fire on the beams and the names of the soldiers written in french. The main monument, is the "cross"(croce) that replaced the "tree of freedom"(l’albero della libertà) after the troops' expulsion. A symbolic place, instead, is the small square in contrada seta, on the route of the ancient Via Popilia, where, it is said that the general Massena observed the city before the attack. Right here there was a very large oak that was subsequently called in the  local dialect as the "Massena cersa". In addition to the places and inner areas of the town of Lauria, the battle involved the troops of Napoleon in Lagonegro, the arrival in the shallows  of Castrocucco up to Trecchina. In particular, Maratea was mortared, and it had serious losses.

Description

Thematic areas Hstory (moments,aspects/problems,main characters)
Cultural interest evaluation The event of 1806 characterized the local history and tradition. It changed radically the appearance of the town producing a new urban organization(the city walls were destroyed and the streets were made wider.)In the collective memory the tragedy linked to the fire and to the fallen(more than 1000) and how the town was transformed in a battlefield remain. This aspect distinguishes the formation of the cultural identity of the town of Lauria ,because the main historical characters of the town were envolved but also because the battle was unique under a historiographical point of view(the defeat of a baricade legitimist). The event is commemorated in its centenary and bicentenary.
Different didactical and divulgative moments were dedicated to the theme, even if the historical places of the event weren’t properly enhanced and this doesn’t make the conservation and the knowledge easy;the researches about it could be disconnected from the public perception.Even if the memory of the event is’t disappearing, proper methods would be needed to enhance the urban context from an historical and identity point of view.
Context The local historical context is a community rich in cultural, material and immaterial elements that raise, especially in times of "recurrence", a greater interest. The attention for history is characterized not only by regular teaching activities but also by various local researches and divulgation centers which study   the life of the most popular characters in various respects, such as: Ruggero, admiral from whom  the name of the Castle is taken , located on top of the Cafaro district; Brancati, the cardinal of Lauria; Lentini, venerated by the religious community; and others such as:Ulloa from Lauria and  last king of the Two Sicilies.; the vice count (Raffaele), historiographer and publicist of "L'ora presente" (quindicinal of 1906); The vicecounts(Charles and Paul) and Sarubbi "Men of Culture", active in the period of resurgence and made advertisment activities. A community of studies is operative within the  community through times of social and public aggregation: events, exhibitions and, in particular, publications, including scientific ones, which denote modes of knowledge transmission in predominantly written form , or even moments of debate (linked to the convention activities) which, however, in the case of Lauria's battle, take on an expressive form especially in the evocative date around the  8th of  August.
Description of the  managment mode The battle of the 8th of  August is, therefore, the same as the "historical" dates of annual recurrence. If the centenary was commemorated by a community more inclined to make it a "popular" date, the bicentenary, organized by the P.Ulloa cultural centre with the support  of the public administration, assumed the most institutional features. In the first decade of August, however, the memory of the event remained current. The current cultural event is the result of the narration and oral transmission, especially with regard to "mitopoietic" factors, and written  with the envolvment of archival research. It is about the most critical aspects related to the military history and to the historical forces used , to define the details and their respective physiognomies. The "battle" was also the subject of a  local debate, even with political inclinations, and this underlines its importance . The evocation of the battle is an opportunity to animate the memory in an innovative way, and vice versa, with performative arts, theatrical and musical representations, and ultimately the "il gioco"(the game). In particular, cultural associations "P. Ulloa" and "I.S.S. BA.M." (Publisher of a scientific journal of historical studies "Basiliskos") organized evocative and artistical and cultural evocative events proposing new expressive and content elements.Infact the historical memory is not only about the main characters but also about characters from the people like Angiola Perrone, the woman that launched the intitial allarm from the canopy.Other associative groups collaborate in the realization of cultural events, also under the tourism aspect. The battle is an historiographical and artistical and cultural object.
Significant features The elements that characterize the battle as a cultural event are defined from the areas of the battles and from the artistical and cultural evocation elements. These are object of a tourism itinerary and characterize the knowledge of the facts in a different way:these elements are the “cersa di Massena”(mithology the palace Parazzini(were the troops stayed),and also the characters of Angela perrone and monsignor Lodovici.
In 2014 thanks to the work of the public art laboratory a video document about the social survey  through interviews to the people was inserted. It was possible to realize a thatrical laboratorywith local associations envolved in a redacted text about the evocative moment that leads to the urban  game organized by another association about new forms of divulgation.Based on a wide bibliography that corontates years of research it is possible to continue the work of evocation and cultural-artistical enhancment of the historiography, divulgating and teaching also under a pedagogical aspect.
