Thematic areas Historical (moments, aspects/problems, main characters)
Cultural interest evaluation The territory was named national monument in 1927.It represents the main historical root among a large portion of the territory of Basilicata.Infact here the monks of the basilian order arrived to seek for shelter, pushed by the iconographic battles.
The monastic community of S.Angelo al Monte Raparo was founded by S.Vitale da Castronovo of Sicily that arrived from there and founded the monasteries. So the site represents the origins of the modern history in the medieval age stimulating the social and religious gathering process.Work tools were discovered in the area.
Context The historical context of life goes from X to XVI,an era when the gradual decline and abbandoning of the site started. In the area the micaelic cult through pilgrimage took place until the XVIII,on the day of San Michele Arcangelo on the 29th of september, with the traditional street parade.
The referral context was a  ispiring source for the humanist Giovanni Pontano who dedicated space in his poetry to the faun in love with the nymph Ripenia. In fact Fauns and nimphs were traditional characters that lived in the woods or in the waters. In fact in this site there is a cave and a water spring.
Description of the managment mode The conservation sources are literary, evidentiary , iconographic and oral.In the last years in conjunction with the monumental recovery and reconstruction action, thanks to the investment of substantial public resources, the activity was aimed at promoting a systematic schedule of territorial animation interventions by carrying out thematic events aimed at supporting the compatibility of the promotional launch of the tangible referral elements.
Numerous initiatives have therefore been taken to evaluate the different themes that can be pursued and summarized below:
1. Literary, demo-antropological and historical (mithology of  Pan – poetic evocation of  Giovanni Pontano -the first cenobitic settlements  and the underground micaelic cults)
2. Narrative or story of the waters, the woods and the  caves (the myth of Capripede and Ripenia)
3. Sanctity and religious life - Ascetism- underground cults(The basilian monastic settlement of  San Vitale da Castronovo of sicily in 1000 ,inside the cave of S.Angelo al monte raparo, where the sign of the first underground monastery are visible.)
4. Enviromental (Site of interest for the national park of Appennino Lucano.the cave conserves a colony of bats).
The initiatives started in 2006 with the participation in the project Musnet EugalC with the theme of the exchange of experiences for the realization of initiative concerning the “ecomuseums”.These were made in
Basilicata,Friuli and the Czech republic. The historical animation intitiatives are the following:
"Antiqua - il borgo letterario"
"Giornate Basiliane"
"Corteo storico basiliano"
"Premio Città Basiliana".

The town assumed the name of basilian town since 2010.
Significant features The intangible elements are reconducted to the restored element. This was thanks to cultural, religious and social connections through promotional and tourism interventions. The site is one of the tourism attractions of the Agri valley.
