THE MADONNA DEL CARMINE AND CINTI

Localization
The entire religious community of Basilicata.According to the tradition ,the devotion to the Madonna del Carmelo was diffused in Avigliano before other territories of Basilicata, because of the survivors of the crusades that brought this cult to the east. This devotion to the Virgin Mary is so heart felt that the central institution for Demoantropology recognized the event as an immaterial heritage of Italy.

The territory of Avigliano between the centre and the Carmine mountain, along the marian itinerary. This path is made by stone and kerb and represents the difficulty that the pilgrim has to face to get near to the Virgin Mary. This difficulty is made worse for the pilgrims that decide to bring the “cinti” (decorated structures with candles that represent churches, gates etc) on their shoulders.

Description

Thematic areas Sanctity and religious life
Cultural interest evaluation According to the history of the marian cult,on the highest top of the mountain  Montagnola,a rudimental chapel has to be erged or maybe a tent with a painting of the virgin Mary that permits  the passengers to rest. There is no documentation of the primitive altar,if not the popular memory transmitted to the different generations.
The official date of the cult of Avigliano is 1696.Whoever assists the procession of the Vergine del Carmine di Avigliano is striked by the enourmous ex Voto cinti held on the shoulders of the devouts. They are the “Cinti” gifts dedicated to the virgin Mary, for recieved clemency or required clemency,in the memory of someone or simply for religious faith. The origin of the name is still unknown, many are the hipothesises.Every vote has to be done three times ,even not consequentially.
The first historical document is a draft of 1747 conserved in the historical archive of Naples. There is trace of the”cinti”in many religious rituals of the south of Italy, but those of Avigliano are particular because made of candles, flowers and coloured ribbons(held by the person who follows the one carrying the cinto)and currently who produces them is only one artisan of Avigliano.
Context The cinto represents for the population devoted to the Madonna del Carmine the highest moment of devotion to the Virgin Mary because since centuries the ones who carry a cinto has to do the”questua”:this consists in knocking to the doors of the town for financial resources (since according to the tradition the person can’t invest his own money)to realize it,s sometimes the humilitation of a door shut in his face has to be accepted. There are many people involved in this.
Description of the managment mode The techniques to build the cinti are known only by one artisan of the town, but he is getting old and he needs this art to be transmitted to the new generations,to permit them to use the knowledge that can be learned only in the workshop.
Significant features the Cinti evolved through the centuries:during the dark years of the war the little churches represented on the cinti  became airplanes or ships as a symbol of the military force, where family members of the devotes fought or to remember the armies where they fought. The war cinti were built until 1943,while in 1942 there was, among the others, the church of S.Pietro with the obelisk in the middle, decorated with candles as Domenico De Carlo tells, and also the colonnade of Bernini. It was cured in every detail.Since 1997 they assumed bigger dimensions and made the choice of the coloures wider;the candles are decorated with acetate ribbons and the classical handmade decorations.
They are full of symbolic evocations:the ribbons used in carrying the cinto is the bond to the sacred and represent the vote, that the women untied at the end of the procession. The wood represents the cross ,the candle the light of the faith, the coloures are those of the marian iconography while the climb long the slopes of the Carmine mount represents an atonement of the sins.

Context The figure of Federico II di Svevia lives again in the castle of Lagopesole;the initiative,a show that started in 2011 goes through:his life, the poetry, the science and the government of one of the most illuminated and avantgardist characters of the period in which he lived, between 1194 and 1250.”The world of Federico II”(Il mondo di Federico II)this is the title, has this purpose:valorize the castle through the use of highly specialized tecnologies:the result is a suggestive animation of the walls of the castle.here Federico II usualy practiced his liberal arts(the intellectual arts)because his residences in Basilicata were dedicated to the relief of his strains. Here he increased his knowledge about nature through the art of hunting and about the stars observing the universe. The world of Federico II is one of the most fascinating attractions in Basilicata. It is financed entirely by the region and realized by the Comunità Alto Basento
Description of the managment mode Built between 1242 and 1250 on the ruins of an old norman military building for the will of Federico II di Svevia who needed a summer residence for hunting, the castle of Lagopesole ,according to the historian Hubert Ouben,is a unique place, that tells much about the life of Federico II and of his cultural bequests.Today thanks to the museum”museo narrante”it is possible to live the emotions of the court life again, the historical political events and the characters that appeared in the emperors life. All this through an interactive and suggestive journey,an artistic and multimedial set up where the features of Federico II’s various personality shine  and to discover his deeds.
He was attrated by  perfection, that he wanted to put into art, culture, government, the civil cohabitation and in general the”stupor mundi”,the curiosity for the world. The journey starts in the room of the sphere and the maps then goes through the room of the crown and of the court until the room of the findings and the emotions.

MANDOLIN FESTIVAL AVIGLIANO

Localization
Thie culture of the mandoline is considered to belong to all the community of Avigliano, but who plays an important role in it are the new and old members of the plectrum orchestra.
The concrete elements are represented by the musical instruments and the arrangments. The culture of the mandoline was born in the artisan little shops, once existent in all the historical centre of Avigliano. No other practice of saveguard or recovery is signaled in the rest of Basilicata.

Descrizione del bene

Thematic areas Artistic
Cultural interest evaluation The diffusion of the plectrum instruments(mandoline, mandola, mandoloncello, guitar etc)started in the culture of avigliano in XIX,especially among the artisans, who practiced their activities in Naples usually for 6 months or more.Evidently they brought the musical culture of Naples in Avigliano, where the mandoline dominated.
The tradition of the plectrum was maintained and implemented thanks to the centre of musical education, founded in 1956 by Domenico Manfredi;here the plectrum orchestra of Avigliano was founded. This orchestra in the only one in Basilicata and one of the few in the south of Italy(most of them are in the north)but after the death of Manfredi(2000)the difficulty in finding mandoline teachers put the mandoline tradition of Avigliano at risk. Now the orchestra is conducted artistically and didactically by the orchestra director Mauro Squillante, mandoline teacher at the conservatory of Bari, who created with the municipality and the school Politeia the mandoline festival of Avigliano;it is usually celebrated in the first half of august.
Context Originally the context was represented by the social class of intellectuals and artisans. After the foundation of the plectrum orchestra,in the second half of 1900,the interest towards the plectrum instruments moved to the young student’s world(in 1978 the orchestra had 35 elements and the music had 150 total students.)
Description of the managment mode The transmittion of this culture to the new generations continues through the music schools, where adults and children go,and through some musical arrangments directed by the teachers of the music orchestra in Avigliano(extininguished around 1950)and were adapted to the mandoline(for example the oriental march composed around 1910).In the music school there are some people who dedicate themselves to the research of the arrangments and adapting them to the plectrum instruments
Significant features the culture of the mandoline and of the plectrum instruments never broke for 2 centuries, despite the fashion of the different epochs .This is because of the proposed repertory (which came from naples but also local)and because of the versatility of the instruments which sperimented contamination from other national and international musical cultures in the last years.A masterclass of mandoline is associated to the plectrum instruments (international campus of mandoline and guitar “D.Manfredi)held by the teacher Mauro Squillante and others at the hostel annexed to the sanctuary of madonna del carmine,in the middle of the territory of Avigliano at 1.228 metres of hight;it is populated by students from all over italy but also from holland and Algeria. The festival is interesting also for the regions around Basilicata and the teachers would like to create a unique event in Basilicata ,to promote the territory of Avigliano.
Bibliography The local news(and also national) always talked about the plecrtum orchestra since 1960 in occasion of the concerts held in different towns. Also japanese magazines talked about it in 1978-1980).Since 2012 the mandoline festival which takes place in the secodn half of august is widely advertised by internet and the news.

Safeguard plan proposed

Community participation
The local community always participated in the foundation of the plectrum orchestra,as a main character(participating in the music school)and enjoying it(the concerts reached around 600 spectators). Also associations that join the municipality in the organization, sponsors and citizans of Avigliano participate in the concert.
