THE SIEGE OF ATELLA 1496

Localization

Cultural Place
The news about the siege of Atella is in the hands only of the cultists of the homeland, who participated in the manifestations organized for the fifth centenary of the siege in 1996.The fact that important historians like Guicciardini,Philippe De Commines,Paolo Giovio,Domenico Malpiero,Giacomo Racioppi,Giustino Fortunato etc.talk about it testifies the importance of the event.

Geographical location
A silent testimony of the event is the angevin tower,a remaining element of the fortified castle built by the founder of Atella,Giovanni d’Angiò,in 1300.The ambassador of Milan in Naples to described Atella as “a very strong land”because of its castle. It was destroyed by the earthquake in 1694.

Description

Thematic areas - history (moments,aspects/problems,main characters)
Cultural interest evaluation In the summer of 1496,important events took place in Atella:the conquest and the raid of the town  by the troops of the french vice king Gilberto Borbone, count of Montpensier;the long siege(from june until the beginning of august)of Ferdinando d’Aragona and his allies;the capitulation and the surrender of the occupants.
As the result of a series of events which brought the south of Italy to become a spanish province in XVI ,a mechanism of decline started in the town, which was until that moment one of the most important centres of Basilicata.
Context The siege is an indicator of the military importance(infact during the second conspiracy of the barons, the feudatory of the time sent his wife and children to take shelter in the castle of Atella, while he prepared to sustain the aragonese king in the castle of Melfi)and the economic importance(products like wines, cheeses, cured meats were produced in town and some merchants sold them in the main squares of the near regions)that Atella had in 1300 and 1400.
Description of the management mode In 1996,for the fifth centenary of the siege, the municipal administration organized a series of
initiatives to remember the siege of Atella, that marked deeply the history of the town, inviting intellectuals and economic operators.
An exhibition about the siege and a medievel tournament(maybe the first example of those historical reconstructions very popular in Basilicata today;it was repeated just one other time)were organized along with historical research and a series of pubblications.
Significant features The siege of Atella in 1496 marked the french defeat;the french had come to the south of Italy to claim old dynastic rights and conquered the kingdom of Naples. It also brought to a certain decline of the aragonese dynasty, who had to ask the spanish leaded by the great captain Consalvo of Cordoba who was in Atella, for help to reconquer the kingdom. The spanish troops didn’t abandon the south of Italy, infact during the following centuries it became a spanish province.
